Parenting teens in Egypt is always evolving, but a new survey from Alexandria University is raising alarms about a silent epidemic: digital stress. According to the study, Egyptian teens are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety and pressure, much of it linked to social media and the constant need to appear “perfect” online.
The Pressure to Perform
Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have become central to teen life in Egypt. While these platforms offer connection and entertainment, they also create intense pressure. Teens report feeling like they must always look happy, successful, and popular—an exhausting standard that’s impossible to maintain.
This pressure isn’t just emotional. The survey found that stressed teens are less likely to participate in family life, help with chores, or take on responsibilities at home. Many parents say their children seem withdrawn, irritable, or simply “too tired” to engage after hours spent online.
Beyond Chores: The Mental Health Conversation
Experts warn that focusing only on chores or “laziness” misses the bigger picture. Dr. Mona El-Gendy, a clinical psychologist in Alexandria, explains: “When teens are overwhelmed by digital stress, their capacity for responsibility and empathy can shrink. Parents need to address the root causes, not just the symptoms.”
What Can Families Do?
- Open Conversations: Ask teens about their online experiences. Listen without judgment.
- Model Healthy Habits: Set boundaries for your own screen time and talk about self-care.
- Encourage Offline Activities: Promote hobbies, sports, or family outings that don’t involve screens.
- Validate Emotions: Acknowledge that stress is real and offer support, not just solutions.
Looking Ahead
Digital stress isn’t going away, but parents can help teens navigate it by focusing on mental health, open communication, and realistic expectations. By doing so, families can foster resilience and a sense of responsibility that goes beyond chores—preparing teens for a healthier, more balanced future.
